Whitney Straight in a Maserati 8CM was the first winner of "The Border 100". The second SA GP was held on the 1st of January 1936 on a shortened version (11.54 miles) of the Marine Drive Circuit, now named the Prince George Circuit. The highlight of the 3rd SA GP was the visit of the mighty Auto Union team. By 1957 the Prince George Circuit was deemed too dangerous to race on and a replacement track was sought after. It was eventually decided that by leading the existing circuit away from Potter Pass towards East London, they would be able to utilize a massive amphitheatre, and create a circuit with vantage points comprable to the best in the world. The sixth SA GP was held on the new East London Circuit on the first of January 1960. Paul Frere in a Cooper-Climax won, followed home by Stirling Moss in a Cooper-Borgwald and South African Syd van der Vyver in a Cooper-Alfa. The 9th SA GP of 1962, awarded world championship status for the first time, would be the decider of both the drivers and constructors titles. Jim Clark and Graham Hill battling it out for Lotus and BRM respectively. In the race itself, Clark's Lotus developed an oil leak forcing him to retire from a lead of over 30 seconds, thus handing the race win and world championships to Hill and BRM. Clark, already world champion by the time of the 10th SA GP in 1963, avenged his defeat the previous year to win by over a minute from Dan Gurney. The 11th SA GP at East London was held as the first race of the 1965 season, where Clark promptly nailed down pole position for the fourth year in a row. Despite being shown the chequered flag a lap early, Clark went on to win the race once again, the first in a string of victories that would enable him to regain the 1965 drivers crown. In 1966 3 litre engine were introduced into F1.As a result, the FIA decided not to include East London in the world championship as it was felt to be too soon for the constructors to have sorted out their cars. Despite being a non championship race, the12th SA GP was the first to host 3 litre F1 cars. The race was won by Mike Spence in a 2.0 Lotus Covntry-Climax, with Jack brabham setting the fastest lap of 1:25.2 in the brand new 3.0 Repco-Brabham v8. In 1967 the SA GP moved to Kyalami, but what if it had stayed at East London? Well here is your chance to find out what might have been... --- Thanks to Papyrus - Original Game www.Papy.com Gplea - Editor program and forum http://www.kotr.de/org/ http://www.legendscentral.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi Martin Granberg - Track Installer http://home.bip.net/martin/ All those who replied to my questions in the GPL editing forum Raymond Geering and John for the Dunlop bridge Ryk penfold for the groove ST for the AI fix And to a whole lot more people who I can't think of right now, especially those who created the .3do's that I used (as far as possible i used files from the origional papy tracks - if I inadvertently used a 3do from an add-on track I appologise for not asking permission). I am in your debt. Special thanks to Rob Young for helping me with photos of the historic races at East London --- KNOWN BUGS: Hopefully they are all fixed now. Previously the .dat file did not install itself using the installer prog. If you have installed the track and can't see it in GPL check that there is a .dat file in the eastlndn folder. If it is missing copy the dat file from the temp folder that was created by the zip file and copy it to ur eastlndn folder - make sure it is named eastlndn.dat --- MORE!?!
